What is Dandruff
Dandruff, also known as scurf, is a condition characterized by a flaking, itchy scalp. Dandruff is loose dead skin cells from the scalp that are raised on the scalp or that can get stuck in hair. Most people think that dandruff is a disease that has a cure. The truth is that dandruff is simply a natural process of getting rid of the dead skin cells on your scalp. Our skin cells are forever renewing themselves. When the skin cells on our scalp are renewed the old ones are pushed to the surface and out of the scalp. For a person with dandruff the renewal is faster, meaning more dead skin is shed, making the dandruff more noticeable.
Dandruff does not have an exact cause, but there are a few different ideas that are thought to cause dandruff.
The following are items that may cause dandruff
Overactive oil glands in the scalp are thought to be another cause of dandruff.
Lack of sleep
Inherited genetic trait
Inadequate shampooing and rinsing of the hair.
Tight fitting hats.
Excessive use of hair styling products (gel, mouse, hair dye, hair curler…)
Even though dandruff is known as the drying of the scalp, it is most common in people with oily hair.
The scalp may feel itchy, tight or sore. When the hair is combed or brushed, or when the scalp is scratched, the scales from the scalp fall like snowflakes and settle on the eye brows, shoulders, and clothes. This is most commonly seen when the individual is suffering from dry dandruff. However, People with oily dandruff will not have loose scales of skin as the scales mix with the sebum from their scalp and this forms a thick greasy covering over their scalp. While it may not be as easy to detect this type of dandruff, it will still be apparent while combing your hair as the greasy mixture of dandruff and sebum will coat the teeth of a comb.
